Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) remains one of the most influential and celebrated film directors of all time, known as the Master of Suspense. Over a career spanning five decades, Hitchcock directed more than 50 feature films, evolving from silent British thrillers to Hollywood psychological masterpieces that redefined the language of cinema.

Hitchcock's career began in the British silent era with The Pleasure Garden (1925), before pioneering the transition to sound with Blackmail (1929), Britain's first talkie. His British period established many of his signature themes - wrongly accused men, blonde heroines, and elegant suspense - in classics like The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes.

In 1940, he moved to Hollywood where he refined his craft with bigger budgets and major stars, creating iconic films that pushed the boundaries of censorship and audience expectations. From the Gothic romance of Rebecca to the shocking violence of Psycho, Hitchcock's American films cemented his reputation as a supreme manipulator of audience emotion.
