The Godfather Movies: Release Order
The Godfather trilogy stands as one of cinema's greatest achievements, with the first two films widely regarded as masterpieces of American filmmaking. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based on Mario Puzo's novel, the series follows the Corleone crime family across multiple generations, focusing primarily on Michael Corleone's tragic transformation from war hero to cold-blooded Don.
The Godfather Part II employs a dual timeline structure, intercutting Michael's continued descent into darkness in the 1950s with flashbacks to his father Vito's rise to power in 1920s New York. This innovative narrative approach earned it the distinction of being one of only two sequels to ever win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The Godfather Part III arrived sixteen years later, concluding Michael's story as he attempts to legitimize the family business and find redemption. While more divisive than its predecessors, it provides closure to the saga. In 2020, Coppola released The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, a recut version of Part III with a different opening and ending that he considers closer to his original vision.

The Godfather
When aging patriarch Vito Corleone of a powerful Italian-American crime family survives an assassination attempt, his reluctant youngest son Michael is drawn into the family business and embarks on a path of vengeance.

The Godfather Part II
This epic sequel chronicles two parallel stories: young Vito Corleone's rise to power in early 20th century New York, and his son Michael's attempts to expand the family empire in the 1950s while facing new challenges to his authority.

Aging mafia don Michael Corleone attempts to legitimize his empire while seeking redemption for his past sins and mentoring a young protege.
