Flying Guillotine Movies: One-Armed Boxer Films
The One-Armed Boxer Films represent Jimmy Wang Yu's parallel flying guillotine lineage, created after the renegade former Shaw Brothers star was banned from Hong Kong filmmaking. Wang Yu grafted the flying guillotine concept onto his existing One-Armed Boxer franchise, creating a direct sequel where a blind imperial assassin wielding the weapon hunts the titular hero at a martial arts tournament.
Note that One-Armed Boxer contains no flying guillotine - it establishes the protagonist and his backstory. Master of the Flying Guillotine is a sequel to One-Armed Boxer with no narrative connection to the original Shaw Brothers The Flying Guillotine (1975). Wang Yu's film features a deliberately distinct weapon design and became the most culturally influential Flying Guillotine movie - praised by Quentin Tarantino, sampled by the Wu-Tang Clan, and inspiring Street Fighter's Dhalsim character through its extendable-armed Indian fighter.
